Opening Event Miners Tavern, 75 Lang Street, Cobalt

Reception 6:00-7:00pm 7-9 p.m. Entertainment and pizza/finger food snacks

Opening Night Poetry readings Poets will have a 5 minutes of fame time to read followed by the next poet. Introduction of the Festival volunteers. To be one of the poets reading please register with Tyna in advance if possible.

Our application for a poet from the League of Poets to perform and do workshops in 4 elementary schools in the area during the day was approved and poet Betsy Struthers will be visiting Temagami Public, St. Patrick's in Cobalt, Haileybury Public School, and New Liskeard Public School. Our thanks to the League of Poets and the Canada Council for the Arts.

  • 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm White Mountain Publications invites you to the Launch of a new poetry book, Something of Creation, by Chris Marks of Moose Factory, ON at the Highway Book Shop, Highway 11, Cobalt, ON (no tickets required)

  • 6:00 pm -7:00 pm at Corn Meal's Restaurant, 50 Silver Street, Cobalt. Leonard Cohen tribute- bring your favourite poem to read or song to play.

  • 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm A mocktail and cheese reception

  • 8:00 pm Poetry Film Festival (to approximately 10:30 pm) Tickets $8 for event, included in the weekend pass. Selected films are The Danish Poet, animated short which won the best animation category at the academy awards for the National Film Board, a documentary on the life of Leonard Cohen called I'm Your Man. This is a special event film screening partnership with the Film Events Society of Temiskaming (FEST)

  • 9:00 am- 11:00 am Pancake/Poetry breakfast at Corn Meals Restaurant, 50 Silver Street, Cobalt.

  • 10:00 am -12 noon Young Poets Poetry Play Shop art, haiku, music, magic, puppetry, co-ordinators Jerry Jordison and Dave Margetson at the Golden Age Senior's Home.

  • NOON Drummond Recitals at the Drummond Cairn in front of the Cobalt Public Library, 30 Lang Street, Cobalt.

  • 2:00 pm -3:00 pm Silverland Restaurant , 7 Prospect Avenue, Cobalt. parlez vous poesie for franchphone poets

  • 2:00pm -3:00 pm Corn Meals Youth Speak

  • 3:00- 5:00 pm Cafe Des Artistes at the Silverland Inn and Motel 7 Prospect Avenue, Cobalt. Afternoon of mixed art partnership with poets, musicians , and painters.

  • 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm The Literacy Council of South Temiskaming have agreed to have a fundraising dinner and poetry at the Golden Age Centre, Cobalt.. Tickets $8 from Sharon Riel at the Literacy Council.(705-672-4232) Not included in Festival weekend pass.

  • At 7:00 pm the Gala will begin at the Classic Theatre, 30 Silver Street, Cobalt. (tickets required -covered in weekend pass) Doug Shearer of Cobalt will serve as Master of ceremonies. The programme will include:

    • The Dr. William Henry Drummond Poetry Competition winners will be announced, given their prizes, and the opportunity to read their prize-winning poems.The anthology with the prize-winning poems from 2007 and 2008 will be available at this Launch, and then afterwards at the Highway Book Shop, Cobalt, and from White Mountain Publications

    • Performance with Erin Messenger School of Dance. Three poem-inspired dance interpretations.

    • A Lifetime Achievement Award is being created for those who have promoted the literary arts in Northern Ontario, and the first award in this tradition will be presented this evening to Dr. Douglas Pollard, of the Highway Book Shop

    • Ann-Denis Mejaki will be performing two songs.

    • Betsy Struthers poetry reading

    The Midnight HOWL poetry event at 10:00 pm or so -midnight (Under a full moon no less.) at Corn Meals Restaurant, 50 Silver Street, Cobalt.

9:00 am - 11:00 am Poetry/pancake breakfast at Corn Meals Restaurant, 50 Silver Street, Cobalt

1:00pm–3:00pm the final event, the Drummond Day Ceremony at the Classic Theatre will involve reading and some multi-media presentations commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. William Henry Drummond. Doug Shearer of Cobalt will serve as Master of ceremonies. Reception to follow.

Programme to include:

  • Temagami Poetry Choir will recite the poem Temagami and Marvyn Morrison will read a tribute to Archibald Lampman.

  • The new area Poet Laureate will be introduced to the public.

  • Presentation of the Spring Pulse Young Poets Awards, and readings

  • Ann-Denis Mejaki will be performing one song.

A great weekend of unique memories will be experienced as we share our talent and famous area hospitality to the world. I'll leave the last word to Dr. Drummond from his immortal motto:

"play up, play up, play the game"
